Fleas are small parasitic blood sucking insects that feed on mammals such as humans, dogs, cats, pigs and birds, they are commonly detected as their bites are often exceptionally itchy. Fleas belong to an order of insects known as Siphonaptera, which literally means ‘wingless siphon’ and have been known to transfer pathogens including viruses, bacteria and other parasites to their hosts.
The three most common species of flea found on the Gold Coast and Northern NSW are the Cat flea, the Dog flea and the Human flea. These fleas continually bite and typically cause a great deal of stress and irritation when present.

At Surekil Pest Control, our team is trained to effectively eliminate flea infestations with the application of an approved professional insecticide and provide continuous management with the use of an insect growth regulator.
Adult fleas are small, six-legged insects that are brown/beige in colour. They’re around 4mm long (anywhere between 2-8mm) and have comparatively large back legs. A flea has antennae and is vaguely oval in shape. Fleas can jump up to 20cm (8″) – if you spot jumping insects indoors, they’re probably fleas.
Fleas go through several stages during their lifecycle. As well as adult fleas, you may also spot eggs, larvae and flea pupae on your property.
Flea eggs resemble a very small grain of rice – they are white, about 5mm long and have the same cylindrical shape with rounded ends as rice. Once the eggs hatch, flea larvae emerge. These are small, translucent creatures that look like tiny worms or grubs. They are usually around 1.5mm when they first hatch, growing to about 5mm as they feed.
During the transitional stage from pupae to adult, fleas gain their brown colour and gradually take on adult characteristics.
Fleas feed on mammalian blood. They are commonly carried into a home by household pets, such as cats and dogs. Fleas may also be carried by rats, cattle and humans. Once indoors, fleas will take up residence anywhere where there might be a chance of contact with mammals – they’re commonly found in pet bedding, carpets, couches and beds (especially if your pet is allowed on these pieces of furniture) and clothing.
The majority of fleas are specialised to live on one type of host. This means that dog fleas, for example, won’t usually live on humans, as they can’t reproduce unless nourished by dog blood. That doesn’t stop them from biting, unfortunately. Any flea will bite mammals indiscriminately. When they bite, they can pass on a range of hazardous germs, bacteria and viruses.
In addition, flea bites cause considerable irritation. Flea bites look like tiny, oddly coloured lumps. They may develop a red ring around them as the body fights the infection. If an individual is allergic to flea bites, they can develop a large, painful lesion. Flea bites are often horribly itchy and there is a risk of infection if sufferers scratch at them repeatedly. Younger children are particularly vulnerable to the damage a flea bite can do. Not only are they more prone to spend time playing on the carpet (where fleas often hide), but they’re also more likely to have a severe reaction to a bite.
As well as noticing the physical presence of fleas on your property, the appearance of small, itchy bumps indicates you may have been bitten by a flea. If your pets are itching more than usual, or have developed painful sores as a result of repeatedly itching a bite, this could mean your property is infested. You may also find fleas on your pet’s coat during routine grooming.
If you notice any of the above signs that may indicate fleas, prompt pest control is vital. Call the team at Surekil for further information and speedy elimination of unwanted pests.
Yes.
Not only do fleas continually bite which can cause a great deal of stress and irritation, they are a major cause of papular urticaria, an allergic reaction to insect bites, in children.
Fleas have also been known to transfer pathogens including viruses, bacteria and other parasites, such as the double-pored tapeworm, to humans.
Yes.
The initial treatment will only kill the adult fleas that are present. An adult flea can remain dormant in their cocoon for many months, often emerging only when they feel vibrations from a potential host.
For this reason, we both stomp around when carrying out a treatment and combine an insect growth regulator with the insecticide to provide more effective lifecycle management.
Fleas can live on any warm-blooded animal, but seem to prefer to live on humans, cats, dogs, possums, rats and other rodents.
They may be found on shoes, pant legs, blankets, carpets, floorboards, curtains, couches and pet bedding.
