Fire ants are smart and highly adaptive, they can survive in a range of conditions and can travel over and underground, can fly up to 5km, can raft on waterways or travel in organic materials such as soil, hay, mulch, manure, or turf or on vehicles or machinery that has been in contact with them. Fire Ant Nests look like dome-shaped mounds that can be up to 40cm high or be flat and look like a small patch of disturbed soil, they don’t have any obvious entry or exit holes and are usually found in open areas, such as lawns, pastures, roadsides and unused cropland and can be next to or underneath timber, logs, rocks, pavers or bricks.
